The GCCF Still Working Through Thousands of BP Oil Spill Claims

The GCCF & BP Claims

The one year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has come and gone yet the process to compensate individuals and businesses that were affected lingers on.  The GCCF run by Ken Feinberg, is still working through thousands of claims that are still under review.

GCCF Claimants

GCCFThe number of GCCF claimants to date reaches over 500,000 of which 286,490 of those have been paid out (as of April 29th). The majority of GCCF claimants have settled for the quick pay option while few others opted for the final review payout.

Time has been a factor for individuals and businesses as they’ve been forced to accept the quick pay option guaranteeing fast cash.  Many others who have held out for the final review are receiving offers equal to the quick pay option.

GCCF final review

“The final review process has been set up to favor the GCCF and BP in every imaginable way”, stated Jason Monroe a bartender in Destin, FL.

They use whatever statistics that are convenient”, added Monroe.

As the gulf region prepares for the busy summer season, many residents will be eager to put the oil spill behind them and focus on rebuilding their businesses and lives. Lets stay on the GCCF.

GCCF Continues to delay Interim Claims

GCCFGCCF Claims

A little more than 10 percent of interim claims have been paid by the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) so far. Claimants who filed for interim payments were told they would be handled in 90 days. That deadline has come and gone for many and the frustration is growing.

If you are following the claims process like we have been at BPBusinessClaims.com, then you’ve heard the countless stories of business owners that are critical of the GCCF claims process with good reason. They have been frustrated by the process and by Administrator Ken Feinberg every step of the way.

GCCF Interim Claims

Feinberg claims that he’s got 78 percent of the people paid. He may be paying individuals, yes. And he’s paying businesses that are taking a final claim, but those businesses who are taking interim payments are being put to the at the end of the line.

GCCF reaction

GCCF spokesperson Amy Weiss, said there are a couple of reasons for the delays. The first, she said, is that many people didn’t file the proper documentation. The other reason is that they have received so many GCCF Claims with the proper documentation that they’re simply behind.

If they’re that far behind, why aren’t they hiring other people? If they’re that far behind, why aren’t the people at the local GCCF claims office capable of making decisions and getting people paid?

Weiss points out that if your claim has gone over the ninety day limit, you have the right to bypass the GCCF. She went on to say that the GCCF doesn’t have the authority to deliberately hold up a claim.
